Magazine reviews

Magazines such as Empire, review films for the average joe, age 18-24. It commonly includes large pictures, which can set up the entire review. A film like 'The Expendables' featuring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Eric Roberts had a large picture of the cast of these 'legendary' action heros from many films. This picture alone could attract an audience to read the review, because they see a face they recognise and proceed to read the review.

This image in one glance sums up the film, with guns, explosions and non stop action from these iconic action figures will undoubtedly draw an audience.

Film posters tend to focus on one primary character who can tell the audience what is going to happen in the film. this often . However, there are other things that gointo a film postersuch as the primary setting of the film, or on one specific plot point that may make the viewer question what is linking them and thus draw them in to watch the film. Also, most posters will tend to emphasise the primary actor, if they are well known, as someone like Daniel Craig would be.

In this film poster, it is very simple, with Daniel Craig and the Bond girl' walking with a burning building in the background. Anybody who has even heardof James bond knows he always has a 'bond girl' and wherever james bond goes, undoubtedly something is going to blow up or be destroyed, so this film poster simply advertises classic James Bond which draws people in to watch. The film title is also clearly shown so the viewer can remember it and research if nessasary.

What is a short film?

A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. No consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits"

History
Longer films were rare before the 1920s, so length-based categories had little meaning. By the 20s, a ticket purchased a varied program including a feature and several supporting works from categories such as second feature, short comedy, 5-10 minute cartoon, and newsreel.
Short comedies were especially popular, and typically came in a serial or series such as the Our Gang films, or the many outings of Charlie Chaplin's 'Little Tramp' character. Although there was often no set release schedule, these series could be considered somewhat like a modern TV sitcom - lower in status than feature films but nevertheless very popular (comedians such as Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton all 'graduated' from shorts to features).
Animated cartoons came principally as short subjects, as did newsreels. Virtually all major film production companies had units assigned to develop and produce shorts, and many companies, especially in the silent and very early sound era, produced mostly or only short subjects.

Today
A few animated shorts continue within mainstream commercial distribution. For instance, Pixar has screened a short along each of its feature films during its initial theatrical run since 1995 (producing shorts permanently since 2001).[2] Since Disney acquired Pixar in 2005, Disney has also produced animated shorts since 2007 with the Goofy short How to Hook Up Your Home Theater.

Wallace and Gromit can also be classed as a short film, because they are about 15-25 mins long. They have become one of the most watched short films in history.

Following my audience research, I am going to change my main character to a man called derek. Same profile, workaholic, slightly OCD, likes everything neat and tidy.

Film Reviews

In film review magazines, films are generally give a rating of 1-5 stars or a percentages. However, many high paying film studios will pay for a double page spread of their film's review. These particular films will have big name stars to have on the page in large images to draw in the audience who would usualy go and see this actor. This audience will usually have no desire to see the latest art house film, much rather the most entertaining film out with actors they know and have seen before. The film may get a terrible review but as a form of marketing it is very effective and cheaper than buying advertising space in magazines.
For example, 'The Expendables' received an average score in 'Empire Magazine' yet was a double spread feature, emphasising the films marketing ploy of a huge cast of big action star names, with images of all the characters together.

People who generaly read film reviews would be your average joe. Film reviews are everywhere, magazines, newspapers, even on the trailers of the film they have quotes from reviews integrated into the trailer. Also films are often reviewed informally from friends and family. Social networking sites also have a big part in reviews because you can post a status as "just saw this film, was amazing". this could lead to other people going to see the film when they normally wouldnt go.

Development

Was thinking also if i go with the fly idea that i could make the fly do matrix style bullet time dodging, think with abit of editing that could easily be possible!

ok new idea

was watching Terminator Judgement day on tv the other day and i heard the line "thats like going after a fly with a bazooka" and it sparked an idea which is also inspired by "black hole" and "beep". an office worker working late, and theres a fly buzzing around, it is very annoying and the worker tries more and more to get the fly. in the end he causes so much damage to the building he is in, the boss comes in and he is fired. the fly can be stop motion, and extream close ups can show him doging whatever is coming his way ect..

Short Films Continues...

Narration and breaking the 4th wall is a very common occurance in short films, as it helps speed up the narrative. For example "Sweet" has a mixture of narrating and breaking the 4th wall to quickly explain his relationship problems.

The use of music is not very common with an intensive narrative because the story has to be explained to the audience. With animations, there is more likely to be music because it suits the narrative of the story.

The narrative of Short films are generally beginning middle and end, however some break out of the sterotype and go for other narratives.

Stop motion is quite big with short films. Films like "sorry im late" take weeks to complete with thousands of pictuers being taken. Characters like Morph are popular as well because they are so versitile with what they can become.

What is a short film?

A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. No consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". long films were quite rare before the 1920's, Charly Chaplin's silent comedy was a massive hit.

I have watched several short films on the BBC short films website and Vimeo. My favorite was 'The Crusader', which is a mockumentary about a man who claims he is Batman, and he plans to sue the writers of batman for stealing his identity.

There are many problems with short films, because you have to tell a story in a short space of time. Feature films have the luxury of time and can take its time to reveal characters and storyline. Shorts generally only have a few characters and a very simple plot. For example "The Sofa" is about a boy who stabbed his families very expensive and precious sofa, and he goes to all lengths to cover it up with his hand up till christmas, when his parents assume it was his uncle that came over who had a big ring on, and the boy was relieved.

Short films are all over the place. There are festivals of short films, they are extras on dvds, they are all over the internet. Short films are making abit of a come back, with animation and comedy being the most watched.

Origami In the Pursuit of Perfection from MABONA ORIGAMI on Vimeo.

i saw this andthought that i could do stop motion story and the characters followa voice overlike this video?

some top tips

I have found a step by step guide on wikihow, and here are some top tips!

1. 24 pictures equals one second of film. It's best to take two pictures of the same shot, so you only require 12.

2. Set up a good source of lighting. It might be a lamp or a flashlight. If your light is flickering, you need to shut off other sources of light. Close the blind, or curtains etc.

3. Move the figure bit by bit - very small movements each time. It may be the entire body if the figure is walking, or it may just be an arm, head or leg. If you are moving only one body part and you find that the figure is tilting or threatening to fall over, make use of poster tack under the feet or other area touching part of the set.

4. Import the pictures into the desired program. Make sure the pictures are at a very small duration so they flow very fast.

this made me think about the possibilities of stop motion!

Idea

i have had an idea, its quite moral though...
basically its all going to be stop motion with plastiscine figures. There will be a woman figure and two men. both men fancy the girl but one is truthful and a decent guy, the other is a mean guy who makes things up to impress the girl and does bad things (e.g speeding on a motorbike, pushing people away). the bad guy realises that the girl likes the nice guy, and trys to "get him". Bad guy goes and punches the good guy in the face but his hand just gets absorbed into the head. then he tries to kick because he cant get away and his foot gets absorbed. he is then stuck to him and has to follow him around and realises he is nice and then the bad guy turns nice and he gets unstuck. then he lets the original nice guy have the girl.
