Film Reviews
In film review magazines, films are generally give a rating of 1-5 stars or a percentages. However, many high paying film studios will pay for a double page spread of their film's review. These particular films will have big name stars to have on the page in large images to draw in the audience who would usualy go and see this actor. This audience will usually have no desire to see the latest art house film, much rather the most entertaining film out with actors they know and have seen before. The film may get a terrible review but as a form of marketing it is very effective and cheaper than buying advertising space in magazines.
For example, 'The Expendables' received an average score in 'Empire Magazine' yet was a double spread feature, emphasising the films marketing ploy of a huge cast of big action star names, with images of all the characters together.
People who generaly read film reviews would be your average joe. Film reviews are everywhere, magazines, newspapers, even on the trailers of the film they have quotes from reviews integrated into the trailer. Also films are often reviewed informally from friends and family. Social networking sites also have a big part in reviews because you can post a status as "just saw this film, was amazing". this could lead to other people going to see the film when they normally wouldnt go.

ok new idea
was watching Terminator Judgement day on tv the other day and i heard the line "thats like going after a fly with a bazooka" and it sparked an idea which is also inspired by "black hole" and "beep". an office worker working late, and theres a fly buzzing around, it is very annoying and the worker tries more and more to get the fly. in the end he causes so much damage to the building he is in, the boss comes in and he is fired. the fly can be stop motion, and extream close ups can show him doging whatever is coming his way ect..

Short Films Continues...
Narration and breaking the 4th wall is a very common occurance in short films, as it helps speed up the narrative. For example "Sweet" has a mixture of narrating and breaking the 4th wall to quickly explain his relationship problems.
The use of music is not very common with an intensive narrative because the story has to be explained to the audience. With animations, there is more likely to be music because it suits the narrative of the story.
The narrative of Short films are generally beginning middle and end, however some break out of the sterotype and go for other narratives.
Stop motion is quite big with short films. Films like "sorry im late" take weeks to complete with thousands of pictuers being taken. Characters like Morph are popular as well because they are so versitile with what they can become.

What is a short film?
A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. No consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". long films were quite rare before the 1920's, Charly Chaplin's silent comedy was a massive hit.
I have watched several short films on the BBC short films website and Vimeo. My favorite was 'The Crusader', which is a mockumentary about a man who claims he is Batman, and he plans to sue the writers of batman for stealing his identity.
There are many problems with short films, because you have to tell a story in a short space of time. Feature films have the luxury of time and can take its time to reveal characters and storyline. Shorts generally only have a few characters and a very simple plot. For example "The Sofa" is about a boy who stabbed his families very expensive and precious sofa, and he goes to all lengths to cover it up with his hand up till christmas, when his parents assume it was his uncle that came over who had a big ring on, and the boy was relieved.
Short films are all over the place. There are festivals of short films, they are extras on dvds, they are all over the internet. Short films are making abit of a come back, with animation and comedy being the most watched.
